Comic Influences

The Boondocks (comic strip)

Nemi (comic strip)

Naruto (manga)

Gantz (manga)

The Boondocks originated as a comic first created by Aaron Mcgruder, started of going on the Diamondback, the student newspaper at the University of Maryland, College Park. The comic moved from the Uni papers to a monthly hip hop magazine ‘The Source’ in 1997. What I researched from an interview of Aaron Mcgruder the comic got really popular from the white readers but ounce it became into an animated series it got more of a black audience. As for my comic is going on website for a magazine called LIVE magazine, so the journey of Aaron mcgruder making the transition from creating a comic strip to a 2D animated series inspired me to do my comic and final film.

Nemi is a Norwegian comic strip, posted on the metro newspaper written and drawn by Lise Myhre. The cartoon started of very dark using heavy metal subcultures. As the years gone by Lisa Myhre turned the comic brighter but she stills touches serious issues and mostly in the saturday panels from what I researched. The black and white style is similar to the style of my comic and I did the same by making my film in black and white.

Naruto is one of the first manga’s I read and the black and white style of the manga is the main influence in my comic is what i try to show in my short film.

Gantz is also a main influence in my style of drawing in the comic and they have a lot of detail in their drawings which is one of my strengths. I also like the way the drawings of anatomy looks so well done.

“So, roughly speaking, the word manga in English means Japanese comic.” (page 8) and “Alas, in this visual material, the portrayal of contemporary manga was limited to one wordless sequence by Tezuka an a pin-up of DragonBall, with not a speech balloon or sound effect in sight.” (page 18) in Manga Sixty Years of Japanese Comics.
